How do I make an appointment with a counselor?

Making your first counseling appointment can be anxiety-provoking. At Morning Light Christian Counseling we try to make setting up an appointment as easy as possible. You can call or text 405-664-3960 to schedule an appointment. If we do not answer your call, make sure to leave a voicemail and we will get back to you within one business day. You are also welcome to fill out the contact form on our website. Please include at least one form of contact information and we will get back to you within one business day.

During our initial contact, we will likely need information about your availability as well as an email address for paperwork. These initial conversations are less than fifteen minutes, so having any other specific questions ready can also help us use our time wisely.

Is there anything I need to do before I come to my first counseling appointment?

At Morning Light Christian Counseling we want your first counseling appointment to be as helpful as possible. This is why we ask clients to complete paperwork prior to the appointment. The paperwork is sent via email and completed on an online portal, so there is no printing required. Completing the paperwork before the appointment allows the therapist to spend minimal time going over logistics. Thus, maximizing the time spent working on your current challenges.

What happens during the first session?

Whether you’ve been to a counselor previously or not, the first counseling session can feel overwhelming. At Morning Light Christian Counseling we get that and we want to help you feel as relaxed as possible. Because paperwork is completed before the counseling appointment, you will spend the majority of your first session talking with your therapist about what brings you into counseling and what you would like to gain from counseling. Depending on your situation, your counselor will likely give you tools or homework to help you begin moving toward the progress you wish to see from counseling.

How can counseling help me?

Whether you are experiencing a seemingly small life change, anxiety attacks, relationship issues, or something in between, counseling can help you walk through deep hurts with someone who is unbiased and trained to help with your specific challenge. A counselor can help you begin to regulate your emotions, take back control of your life, and experience more meaningful relationships.

How long is a typical session?

A typical session is 45-50 minutes long. There may be some instances where your therapist wants to do an hour and a half session; however, that will be determined by the counselor and the client prior to the appointment.

What is the cost of counseling?

When you’re in a painful situation, adding an extra expense can feel overwhelming. At Morning Light Christian Counseling we have seen over and over again that when a person has skin in the game they are more invested in the counseling process as a whole. We see people get better faster as a result of their financial investment in counseling. Our goal is not for our clients to stick around forever and we believe that paying the full amount for counseling can be one way to help motivate clients to put as much into counseling as our counselors do.

For the specific cost to see a counselor, please contact the individual counselor directly and they can give you more detailed information.

Can my insurance cover the cost of counseling?

Every insurance company is different and every policy is different. We encourage you to begin by checking with your insurance company to see what your policy covers. It is also important to know if you need to meet your deductible prior to those costs being covered.

If your insurance does cover the cost of counseling, a counselor in-network can work with you to begin that process before or during the first session. Make sure to bring your insurance card to your first session or complete the insurance information on the client portal prior to the first session. If your counselor is not in-network for your insurance company, it is possible that you could be reimbursed for the cost of the session using a superbill system.

Please contact the individual counselor you wish to see for more information regarding insurance coverage and reimbursement.

How is counseling different than talking to a friend?

At Morning Light Christian Counseling we want you to have friends. Social support is incredibly important as you walk through the counseling journey. Counselors are a little different than friends though.

Unlike an hour with a friend, an hour with a counselor is about you achieving your goals and processing your experiences. This means conversation will be meaningful and intentional. In other words, there won’t be a lot of small talk. You will not talk much about your counselor. At first, this may feel foreign or one-sided, but the purpose is to allow your counselor to come alongside you to help you with the difficulties you are experiencing. Your counselor wants you to be the focus, so your time can be as purposeful as possible.

Once I begin counseling, how long will it take to get better?

At Morning Light Christian Counseling, treatment is catered to the individual person. This means we look at your unique circumstances, who you are, and what you desire in order to create a personalized plan to help you get to the place you want to be. Our personal approach makes it difficult to give a generalized answer regarding the length of treatment; however, we can tell you that our counselors desire to help you get better and get on with life. We often say that we our working ourselves out of a job because we do not want you to just sit in therapy indefinitely: we want you to get better.

Therapy has the reputation of taking forever, but that is not our goal at Morning Light Christian Counseling.

If I receive counseling services, will anyone find out about it?

No one other than your counselor will ever find out about you receiving counseling services. Our counselors are licensed professionals, which means they are bound by law to keep your services completely confidential.

Your counselor will go over the limits of confidentiality with you during your first session.
